Civil Affairs Command

While other divisions of the Sheriff's Office use most of the resources of the Sheriff's Office, the Service of Civil Process is the primary responsibility of any Sheriff's Office. Civil Process consists of Subpoenas, Evictions, Garnishments, Divorce Papers, Small Claims, Writs, Executions, Protection from Abuse Orders and various other Civil Process. Most of these documents must be served in a timely manner and will in many cases require a response from the defendant back to the court. Many come from other jurisdictions, both in state and from out of state. Sheriff's sales are also conducted by the Civil Division. Over the last few years the Civil Division has served an average of approximately 15,000 to 20,000 documents. As the county's population increases so does the number of civil documents filed in the county.

The deputies assigned to the Civil Division are full time sworn officers and carry out other routine duties as needed. They are assigned specific areas within the county. The primary support staff for the Civil Division is located in the Sheriff's Office in Bay Minette. Clerical workers handle the bulk of the Civil Process received by the Sheriff's Office. Other clerical staff is located in the Fairhope and Foley Satellite Courthouses.

The issuance of Pistol Licenses is also handled by the Civil Division. Please see the related link for a Pistol Licenses application and these General Guidelines. If you have questions, please contact our Office @ 251-937-0200.

Alabama's Landlord-Tenant Law spells out what makes a rental dwelling livable and lists the basic rights and duties of both tenants and landlords. This is two page brochure. Click Page 1 and Page 2 to see the entire brochure.
